what the hell is the white stuff..? no actually don’t tell me.

  2. Angela says:

You’d think “porn” would mean “pork”,
but I’m quite sure “ebi” means “eel…

  3. H.D. says:

For those with more… unusual tastes.

  4. Anonymous says:

You’ve had a bit too much deepresso this morning yes?

  5. Anneliese says:

    Porn Curry… That’s HOT!

  6. “Ebi” is “shrimp,” not “eel.” Somehow they got “porn” from “prawn”?

  7. StyckyWycket says:

I get the weird feeling I know exactly how this Engrish happened: it has to do with the litteral pronunciation of the L337 “pr0n”.

But then again, I could just be a total Capt. Obvious.

  8. B3llit0 says:

I was about to comment that “ebi” is shrimp and not pork, but someone already has. Strangely, the menu items are all in katakana, which is usually only used for loanwords and special terms (“curry” and “masala” are OK, not sure why the menu writers opted for katakana on the shrimp).

If you’d like to see it, here is the kanji for shrimp: 蝦

    To rewrite the menu:

    蝦のカリ
    Shrimp curry

    蝦のマサラをカリ
    Shrimp masala curry

    蝦のマッカニ
    Shrimp makhni

  9. Jax says:

    porn = pr0n = prawn

  10. jen says:

EGAD you guys are boring! You’ve creatively turned what could have been a delightfully dirty ‘porn’ blog into definition central.

    Tisk, tisk :(

  11. Mi-suky says:

I totally agree, it’s EXTREMELY annoying to think that we simply can’t figure out the punchline unless the panda points it out >_>

  12. B3llit0 says:

More like Nihongo no Engrish Central, your number-one source for what’s REALLY going on behind the scenes of Engrish signs.

  13. BAKON! says:

B3llit0, you overlooked that curry is spelled “カレー” in katakana and not “カリ”. I have doubts this was made by the japanese, or perhaps they differentiate japanese style curry from indian style curry (which this seems to be?) or some other weird soup dish I wouldnt let my dog eat

    • Sesoron says:

That’s odd, I’ve only ever seen it spelled カレー before this. That’s the spelling I ordered in my month abroad, and that’s the spelling I learned in class. Not only that, but my go-to dictionary (Jeffrey Fried’s) doesn’t list anything relevant for カリー. Where was it that you encountered these alternate spellings?

    • katirrac says:

Anyone who would feed curry to their dog deserves the outcome.

    • B3llit0 says:

I noticed that, merely leaving as much of the menu intact as possible. Again, it strikes me odd that they would write 蝦 in katakana, so this was probably made by Koreans or Chinese. Weird, isn’t it?

      • Nanasi says:

No. You are wrong. You can stop now.

      • Tom says:

I’ve only ever seen Shrimp or Prawn written as “ebi” in katakana (sorry no japanese on this pc) – and curry written as “karee” – so it seems strange to see it as “karii”.

        You aren’t completely wrong ;)

      • WeirdFish says:

It’s just a style choice, just like English signs and store names aren’t REQUIRED to have proper capitalization or spacing.

    • JW says:

It was a napalese-run restaurant… maybe that could explain the use of katakana?
There was also “Mautton curry” on the menu… not funny though

  14. somehow, this doesn’t turn me on…….

  15. nickelbacksucks says:

I’ve seen Popsicles and lollipops but pron curry is a new one.

  16. PoohHag says:

Waiter, there’s semen in my soup……..

  17. daisy4given says:

    uuuh! NASTY!

  18. Az says:

Waiter! Theres curry in my semen!

  19. Egao No Genki says:

Ebi is a general term for seafood (mainly shrimp.)

If there was a “Japanean,” (is that the analog for “Engrish?”) one would be misspelling “ebi” as “hebi” (snake!)

  20. owo says:

Some of you speak Japanese worse than the Japanese speak English.. (to not know what ‘ebi’ means.. it’s probably one of the main ingredients in most Japanese dishes.. >_>)
I wonder if there’s Japanese pictures of American restaurants that wrote ‘ebi’ on their signs when it’s clearly unagi.. XD
