I just found a hilarious example of a machine translated menu, http://rahoi.com/2006/03/may-i-take-your-order/ and the explanation of the most confusing:
“word “gan” means both “to dry” and “to do,” and the latter meaning has come to mean “to fuck.” Unfortunately, the recent proliferation of Colloquial English dictionaries in China means people choose the vulgar translation way too often, on the grounds that it’s colloquial.”
You should get an award for posting that link. Or maybe you should be fined.

The first character has several meanings. One of which is Dry or Dried (there’s no tense in the Chinese language). Another meaning is ‘to do’ as in ‘to do something’.
Unfortunately one of the first commercial Chinese-English translating programs made interpreted it as ‘to do someone’. ie. ‘to fuck someone’.
Hence the liberal use of the word ‘fuck’ sprinkled in stores and restaurants throughout China.
At least we’re all being educated on bad Chinese translations.

幹 (Traditional Chinese)
干 (Simplified Chinese)

2) main part of sth
3) to manage
4) to work
5) to do
6) capable
7) cadre (in communist party)
9) to fuck (slang)
Never mind that the two are pronounced slightly differently. Looks like Simplified Chinese has much to answer for.
So now we know that the site can handle Unicode but not a simple list of numbers…
And here I thought it was a subtle and witty side comment.

Are you using the MDGB Chinese english dictionary site? My daughter who is taking Mandarin in school came to my rescue and helped me look up these words there. We got the same result.

Someone illiterate simply went to the computer and typed based on the sounds of words…. then flopping them into some translation software. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!
