Yeah I know those, used to take em against coughs. Never understood why the word Retard was in there. It has no meaning in Dutch. I think it must be related to the French word meaning “to slow down”.
It does sport one of the longest words in our langauge on the box “hoestprikkeldempend”.

It means that the effect of the pill starts only after some time. Retard just means delayed. That’s why it is used to describe people who seem to have delayed cognitive development.

I’m Belgian, I’m a physician and I work in The Netherlands, so I’m well placed to comment on this.
“Retard” capsule is commonly used in Belgium as well as in The Netherlands to indicate that a capsule (or tablet) has a prolonged action. Of course it comes from the French, just like the English “retarded” does.
If it’s for coughs, they probably meant ’suppressant’.
It’s supposed to be ‘time released’ so it continues working for 8 hours, but still pretty frickin funny

Oh come on. I know what they meant, I mean my friend that sent this to me from Holland told me that it mean “Time-Release”. Now instead of printing literal English translation, they should have printed “Time-Release” like the rest of the medications do.
Just like 1/2 the stuff on here, they printed a literal translation that would never get printed in this country. It is hilarious.

Hate to spoil the fun but “retard” actually DOES make sense here. It means these capsules metabolise at a slowed-down (retarded) rate. And I think the Dutch language borrowed this word from English (compare “fire retardent”).
French/Italian/Latin is more likely.

I nearly sent this one in to Ebaums a few months ago.. It is silly they used Retard since the Dutch have bastardize so many french words.. Cadeau becomes kado.. Niveau – Nivo.. Not that I care about the French language..

Hate to spoil your fun, but “retard” in this sence (pharmaceutical) comes from Latin and means simply “slow-acting”. A lot of drugs come in two forms – “normal” and “retard”, and so you have for example Aspirin and Aspirin retard. I’m Polish and I’ve seen it so many times it’s not funny for me.
