What you describe sounds like hommous (spellings vary). There must be heaps of different recipes on the interwebs. Keep trying them till you find the one you like.
My fave contains chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, garlic & lemon juice, in descending order of quantity.
Ohhhhhh, yesssssss, hommus, marvellous stuff! Enough hommus can make almost anything edible (except for horse shoe crap, maybe).
Don’t forget a little parsley and salt.
The only ‘other major portion’ of the world I know where Foul Mesdames (always makes me think of Ladies of a Questionable Nature) is eaten is Egypt and parts thereof. Beware.. it is dangerous if injested in copious quantities!

I have a can of it at home. The grocery store a block from my office sells it as “foul”, which (if you have been paying attention at all) is one of the optional names for Fava Beans.
I consider “foul” to be one of the optional names for green beans, too.
I’d say it’s true of canned butter beans.

They have these in my local grocery shop. Even though I know they’re fava beans, I can’t help but chuckle every time I see them. Then again, I chuckle a little when I buy ‘doodi’ as well (and even more when I make a nice dal with it and people ask what’s in it… teeheehee).
