Even though they do a lot of practice in listening, reading, speaking, and writing, we should understand that they are faced with a daunting task when it comes to speaking proper English. English as a Second Language (ESL) students should avoid making the errors discussed here below if they ever desire to be fluent in grammar.
Placing words wrongly as they ask questions
What I can do to make it top of my class? This question should be asked as, “What can I do to make it top of my class?
The order in which to place words is a general problem for most of the ESL students. However, when they intend to ask questions, the mistakes become more intense. The incorrect intonation makes the questions that the students seek to ask appear or sound like a statement that is incomplete.
Mixing uncountable and countable nouns
Consider the statement, “There was many money that was contributed in the funds drive.” It is erroneous. This statement should be written as, “There was much money that was contributed in the funds drive.”
You can easily tell a student who has not learnt that uncountable and countable words are different and they should be treated differently. ESL students more often than not do not see the difference between many, much, little, a little, few, and a few among others. You will always hear them say, “I have been reading much books,” or “My colleague has many money.” Do not laugh at them. Always seek to correct them with a lot of understanding since most of the mistakes can be corrected once and for all.
The choice of words
You will always hear most of the ESL students saying, “I love English Premier League. It is a funny one.”
ESL students suffer the challenge of wrong choice of words. Most of them will always mix up words like farther and further while other cannot make out the difference among the words look, see, and watch.
Most of the ESL students repeat the subject matter a lot
Consider this statement, “My class it is a big one.” It has an error. This statement should be written as, “My class is a big one.”
Most of the students will properly use a noun as a subject in the sentence, but they will always feel obligated to add a pronoun immediately after the noun. It should not be like this.
Agreement of subject and verbs
Look at this sentence, “She have a lot of friends.” As an ESL student, you may not tell whether it is right or wrong. In the real sense, the sentence is wrong. It should be written as, “She has a lot friends.”
Speaking and writing is a big challenge for most of the ESL students. However, most of them have gone over this.
